February 28, 2011 – 2:30 pm

A snow leopard, polar bear and hare were chosen as official mascots of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics on Saturday after an online vote open to Russians.

The snow leopard got a prominent boost when Russian Prime Minister Vladmir Putin said it was his preference. PM Putin is largely responsible for helping Sochi win the 2014 Winter Olympics bid, and he said early on Saturday, before the vote, that the leopard would be his “symbolic choice.”

Putin told students during his visit to Sochi: “(The snow) leopard is a strong, powerful, fast and beautiful animal. Leopard species had been destroyed around here but now they are being regenerated. If the Olympic project, at least in some way, should help the local environment, then it (picking a leopard) would be symbolic.”

Characters were shortlisted from over 24, 000 ideas submitted to the contest, but suspicions of foul play began to arise when a front runner in the competition, Russian Father Christmas Ded Moroz, was suddenly dropped from the running with no explanation.

A Russian political analyst Dmitry Oreshkin told Moscow Echo radio that the telephone system could have been rigged to engineer results, reports Breitbart. He also said the the leopard “somewhat implausibly” moved around in the ratings.

The snow leopard received 28% of the votes during a live broadcast on Russia’s main Channel One, followed by the polar bear in second place with 18% and the hare in third (16%).

“There are three mascots for the Olympic Winter Games, representing the three places on the Olympic podium,” Sochi 2014 chief Dmitry Chernyshenko said in a statement.

“All top-three characters will become the Olympic Winter Games mascots. The mascots are the choice of our whole country and will remain in the history of the Olympic movement.”

In addition, the Paralympic winter games mascots of 2014, the Ray of Light and the Snowflake, were chosen by Paralympic champions: the Paralympic Games champion and the general secretary of Russian Paralympic committee Mikhail Terentiev, the Paralympic champion and the Sochi 2014 Ambassador Olesya Vladykina, and Paralympic sportsmen Alexander Alyabyev, Vladimir Kiselyov, Margarita Koptilova, Xenia Ovsyannikova and Igor Pustovit, reports Sochi.ru.

“It’s the great honor for us to choose the symbol of the first Paralympic Games in history of our country. The Games will help to deliver positive changes to the lives of millions of people with a disability. It is very important to us that the millions of people living with a disability can find hope and understand that they can achieve incredible goals,” says Mikhail Terentiev. “The story of our fantastic mascots is that they arrived from a far-out planet and that they have infinite potential. It is a highly powerful and emotional image that, despite the difference in their make-up, the Ray of Light and the Snowflake are so united. I’m sure our two mascots will provide further inspiration to our future Paralympic champions and will help to develop Paralympic sports in Russia.”

The rights to the five 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic cartoon mascots have been passed to the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee.  Those who appeared in the final of the contest have received certificates for attending the opening ceremonies of the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2014, reports Sochi.ru, and they have been  awarded with commemorative medals and gifts from the Sochi 2014 Partner Megaphone.

“The finalists visited the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee offices before the vote and met with Dmitry Chernyshenko. The authors have received the encyclopedia “History of the Olympic Games: from Athens to China” containing a written message from the President of the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee,” reports Sochi.ru.

Who designed the mascots?

• Oleg Serdechniy, 1957, Sochi (the White bear),

• Vadim Pak, 1977, Nakhodka (the Leopard),

• Silviya Petrova, 1994, the Chuvash republic state, Yankovsky region, New Buyanovo village (the Hare)

• Natalia Balashova, 1963, Moscow (the Ray of Light),

• Anna Zhilinsky, 2002, St.-Petersburg (the Snowflake).

The Royals: Lady Katie Percy celebrates fairytale wedding to Valentine at Hogwarts

February 28, 2011 – 4:19 pm

Wedding bells are ringing in Britain’s aristocratic circle, not only are we looking forward to Prince William and Kate Middleton’s marriage, but also that of Zara Philips and Mike Tindall — and this weekend Lady Katie Percy finally got her Valentine, even if a little later than February 14.

A crowd gathered at St. Michael’s Church to celebrate the union of Lady Katie Percy, daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland, to city banker Patrick Valentine on Saturday, reports the Sun.

The wedding was truly one of the storybooks: an antique carriage pulled along by two white horses deposited Lady Katie at the church; the bride stepped into the building, which was decorated inside with cream and green lilies, jasmine, hydrangeas and roses, beside her father; she then strode down the aisle in a long white dress of lace with an over-sized collar and a sparkling tiara; then, finally, reverend Canon Michael Webb wed the bride and groom in front of 300 guests, reports the Sun.

As the new couple left the church they were showered by the crowd with yellow rose petals and the reception party was taken to Alnwick Castle to celebrate, the home of Lady Katie’s parents’. If the name sounds familiar, it’s because it doubles as Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films.

High profile guests included Pippa Middleton, who arrived without Kate Middleton and Chelsy Davy who showed up sans Prince Harry. Members of the media were everywhere due to speculation Prince William and Kate Middleton would make an appearance, as they are close friends of the marrying couple. But, predictably, there was no sign of Wills or Kate who probably wanted to keep the focus on the bride and groom. There were rumors that they might have slipped in the back door, but if they did, no photographers caught a glimpse of them.

Prince William’s god daughter Grace, daughter of close friends of the Prince’s Hugh and Rose van Cutsem, was a brides maid for Lady Katie — the same role she will play at the Royal Wedding in April, reports the Express.

Prince William’s friend Thomas van Straubenzee was a groomsman, despite reports that he recently ended his relationship with the sister of the bride.

And now Lady Katie and her Valentine are living happily ever after…for now…

So, everyone is probably wondering where Prince Harry was while Chelsy Davy was busy partying at Lady Katie Percy’s wedding reception at Alnwick Castle . Well, he was seen in the stands that very day with his cousin Zara Phillips at a rugby game.

The royal cousins were there to watch Zara’s fiancé Mike Tindall captain England in the Six Nations match against France, reports the Express. The two royals sat side-by-side in matching red and white flat caps.

It wasn’t all fun-and-games though, the prince he appeared pitch-side at half time to promote a charity run.

Some other Royal news…

For all the fashionistas out there keeping abreast of  Kate Middleton trends “butter London” is soon to release a limited edition nail lacquer called “No More Waity, Katie.” The color is an interesting mix of gray, beige and lilac glitter, which the company’s website calls “soft” and “elegant”— presumably like the future royal.

Could you too snag a prince with a royally polished touch? The company’s website reports the limited edition shade (that comes out March 1) has already sold out through pre-orders.

Kate Middleton fans devastated by the news can try visiting B-glowing.com who is also in possession of the shade.

The goggles, they do nothing: U.K. school bans swimming goggles

Elspeth Lodge February 25, 2011 – 3:23 pm

School authorities in England’s Oxfordshire have banned swimming goggles, relenting only for children with medical notes.

What exactly the council believes is so dangerous about goggles remains mysterious — a spokesman for the Oxfordshire County Council refused to give a specific reason why goggles have been banned.

Parents of the county in the country have branded the ruling “nutty” and “extreme,” reports the Telegraph.

“This local authority, like others throughout the UK, reflects to schools the national guidance provided by various governing sport bodies on this issue,” said a spokesman for the council.”These organisations include The Amateur Swimming Association (ASA), the Swimming Teachers Association (STA), the Association for Physical Education and the Institute of Sport and Recreation Management.”

In June of 2009 Teachers and governors at Ysgol Bryn Coch junior school, in Mold, north Wales, banned goggles. Parents told the Telegraph they thought the rule was “bonkers.”

The headmistress Lynne Williams said “It has been recognised by the British Association of Advisors and Lecturers in Physical Education that goggles can pose a real risk to children, and this has been accepted by the governors.”

Another school, Sidwells Primary school in Exeter, Devon, also banned goggles in 2009. Tracy Brock, the mother of a St. Sidwells student responded to the incident on Parent Dish: “Children are being wrapped up in cotton wool now. If it carries on like this we are going to be breeding a generation of namby pambies. As a kid, I spent every waking moment of summer vacation outdoors swimming in the deep end, climbing trees and jumping on trampolines without a safety net. As long as we got home before the streetlights came on, it was all good. I don’t advocate bringing back all the crazy things we were allowed to do back in the day. Some of them were seriously dangerous (eating candy in secrecy on the roof of my house comes to mind). But banning swim goggles is a slippery slope.”

In opposition to the parental argument, BAALPE advice states: “Head teachers should inform parents carers that goggles can be a hazard and cause permanent eye injury. Wet plastic is very slippery and frequent, incorrect or unnecessary adjustment or removal of them, by pulling them away from the eyes instead of sliding them over the forehead, can lead to them slipping from the pupil’s grasp with the hard plastic causing severe injury.”

Breast milk ‘Baby Gaga’ ice cream is London’s newest luxury dessert

A notice informing customers that 'Baby Gaga breast milk ice cream' has sold out is pictured in the window of the Icecreamists cafe in central London, on February 25, 2011. Ice cream made with breast milk has proved a big hit in a London restaurant, with the first batch sold out within days of it going on sale, its makers said Friday. The ice cream, called Baby Gaga, is made with milk expressed by 15 women who replied to an advertisement posted on an online mothers' forum.

Breast milk ice cream is London’s latest food double dare: the breast-milk-infused flavour “Baby Gaga,” is now available at the Icecreamists restaurant in London’s Covent Garden.

Icecreamists founder Matt O’Connor is confident that his take on the “miracle of motherhood” will catch on, even at at £14 pounds, or $22 a serving. “The Baby Gaga tastes creamy and rich,” he told the Daily Mail. “No-one’s done anything interesting with ice cream in the last hundred years. We’ve came up with a method of infusing ice-cream with breast milk. We wanted to completely reinvent it. And by using breast milk we’ve definitely given it a one hundred percent makeover. It’s just one of a dozen radical new flavours we’ve invented. We want to change the way people think about ice cream’.

“A costumed Baby Gaga waitress serves the ice cream in a martini glass filled with the breast milk ice cream mix. Liquid nitrogen is then poured into the glass through a syringe,” reports the Daily Mail. And the restaurant will serve the  the concoction with whisky and other cocktails as well, making it a bit more of an adult-oriented treat.

So what flavours complement breast milk? The restaurant mixes in Madagascar vanilla pods and lemon zest with the baby milk before the mixture is churned into ice cream.

The breast milk was provided by mothers who answered an advertisement on online mothers’ forum Mumsnet. Victoria Hiley, 35, was one of 15 women who sold milk to the restaurant.

“It wasn’t intrusive at all to donate – just a simple blood test. What could be more natural than fresh, free-range mothers milk in an ice cream?” she said.

When Ms. Hiley first saw the advertisement she thought it might be a joke, but when she found out it wasn’t, she provided the first 30 fluid ounces of milk, enough to make the first 50 servings. Women get paid £15 for every ten ounces of milk.

“Some people will hear about it and go, ‘yuck’ but actually it’s pure, organic, free-range and totally natural,” said Mr. O’Connor. “I had a Baby Gaga just this morning and I feel great.”

TREARDDUR BAY, U.K. — Kate Middleton got a taste of life as a working royal Thursday when she and Prince William dedicated a lifeboat in their first official appearance since their engagement.

Hundreds of people cheered as the smiling 29-year-old princess-to-be poured a bottle of champagne over the vessel in a dedication service at the lifeboat station Trearddur Bay on Anglesey, northwest Wales.

The appearance further whipped up excitement ahead of the couple’s wedding on April 29.

Wearing a three-quarter length beige coat, a black scarf, suede boots and a black feather hat, with her dark hair blowing in the wind, Middleton laughed as she emptied out the bubbly onto the boat.

She was unable to smash the bottle as per tradition because the lifeboat is inflatable.

William, 28, and Kate stood close beside each other on a podium as they sang the British and Welsh national anthems, “God Save the Queen” and “Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau” (”Land of My Fathers”).

William’s father Prince Charles, the heir to the throne, is the Prince of Wales, and he is therefore Prince William of Wales.

“They are a lovely couple. He is a great lad and she is a beautiful girl,” said well-wisher Jean Critchley, 63.

Kate Middleton and Prince William smile as they visit Trearddur Bay Lifeboat Station. The newly engaged couple named the Trearddur Bay Lifeboat Station’s new Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat the Hereford Endeavour.

The couple attended a private event at a cancer charity shortly after they announced their engagement in November but this was their most high-profile event together so far.

The lifeboat station is near where William works as a Royal Air Force search and rescue helicopter pilot — a job he will return to after the couple’s honeymoon in an as yet unannounced location.

Britain is gearing up for a national celebration to mark the royal wedding at Westminster Abbey in central London, with hundreds of thousands of people expected to line the streets of the capital.

But the impending nuptials have also raised inevitable comparisons with William’s mother Diana, who became a subject of fascination for the public and the media alike before her death in a in a car crash in Paris in 1997.

Toronto police have taken a man into custody for impersonating a peace officer on the grounds of an elementary school.

At 10 a.m on Tuesday officers responded to a “suspicious incident” at North York’s Brian Jr. Public School, near Victoria Park and Sheppard Avenues.

A concerned teacher called the police after a strange conversation with a man who was lingering in the schoolyard during morning recess.

Police say the man, who was dressed in a fluorescent orange reflective vest, said he was a “sheriff,” but didn’t show any identification when asked.

After the vest-clad man went to the parking lot and got into his car, the teacher called police and gave them the man’s licence plate number.

A short while later, police found the man sitting in his vehicle near school grounds.

Toronto’s Daniel Montuoro, 26, has been charged with two counts of impersonating a peace officer.

He was scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.

Prince Harry devises Will’s stag do: wild watersports, BBQ and pub crawling

Lewis Whyld / Reuters

Britain’s Princes William (R) and Harry (L)

February 23, 2011 – 4:38 pm

Royal Wedding Watch — In the weeks and months leading up to the Royal Wedding Posted will keep you up to date on all the latest Royal news. Today, the stag party:

Reports say Prince Harry has held secret talks (not so secret anymore) with one of Britain’s top watersports firms on the South Coast, in preparation for Prince William’s upcoming Stag-do, reports the Sun and ABC.

The two princes and 20 of their closest mates will spend a day racing through the English channel together on speedboats, wake boards, water skis, surf boards, wake skates, wake-surf boards and more.

There is only one water rule: no mixing booze while water sporting — the combination could lead to some unhappy accidents. But, not to worry, there is planned to be much drinking later in the day.

The sporting will be followed by a barbecue and a private pub crawling adventure, to bars that can only be reached by water and on foot.

“They’ve put a lot of thought into choosing the right place for the stag and one of the concerns that they had is being too public,” said ABC News’ royal contributor, Duncan Larcombe.

“One of the other plans they looked into was to rent or stay in a French ski chalet in the French Alps,” Larcombe said. “I think William’s made it quite clear that while Harry’s doing the plans in secret and it’s all a surprise for William, he has set ground rules: not too lavish, nothing that’s going to get him criticism at home and abroad for spending too much money when the economy is not rosy.”

Reports say three weekends have been booked with the watersports firm, so that there is room for altering the stag date, as details are still falling into place. The total cost of the wild weekend is not anticipated to exceed £2,500, the Sun said.
