Is Britain better off with the Monarchy? A new poll suggests ‘yes’

Is Britain better off because of the Royal family?

A recent Guardian/ICM poll, where researchers interviewed a random sample of 1,003 adults, suggests “yes.”

An astonishing 62 percent of people used for research said the country would be “worse off” without the monarchy.

The numbers show that most people in the country believe the monarchy is still relevant to national life, and that it makes Britain a more respected country around the world.

“The surprise findings show that many people believe that the Royal Family unites the country, despite claims from republicans that the institution is outdated,” reports the Daily Mail.

What do the findings suggest about the wedding?

In terms of the wedding, findings suggest that while more people are looking forward to a day off from work than to the royal nuptials, support for the monarchy has been steadily climbing since Princess Diana’s death.

“There seems to be tolerant skepticism rather than royalist hysteria around the wedding itself,” says the Guardian.37 percent of those interviewed said they were genuinely interested in the royal nuptials, while 46 percent said they were not.

However, 47 percent agreed that they will probably watch the event on television this Friday!

“And despite all the celebrity hype surrounding the wedding,” says the Guardian, only 32% think the event is more about glamour and celebrity than British values (52%).”
