Seated next to the Duke of Cambridge, the keynote speaker at the Thirty Club (comprised mostly of top advertising and media executives) on Tuesday, was Premier of South Australia Jay Weatherill. The Premier had let slip earlier in the week that he would meet the royal couple, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, though he did not specify where, when or why. No worries! As usual, it didn’t take long for press to figure out exactly which event the Premier was speaking of— and, also, that he was a guest of  SA Agent General Bill Muirhead, according to Adelaidenow.

A large pack of press gathered outside Claridge’s hotel in Mayfair, London, to witness members of the prestigious Thirty Club arrive for a dinner, where they knew the Duke had agreed to speak.

Adelaidenow caught the Premier on his way out of the event and he commented  about his meeting with The  Duke and Duchess:

“We had a lovely chat about Australia and all of the wonderful things it has to offer and particularly South Australia,” he said.

“I was very happy to be here and to have the opportunity to make a very important international citizen like the Duke of Cambridge aware of our beautiful state.

“I think he knows a bit more about South Australia (now) … it was a very good discussion.”

“He’s a lovely young man and he gave a very warm and personal speech and he’s obviously a fine young gentleman,” he said.

“He spoke very honestly and warmly about himself, his experiences and his hopes for the future.”

“They’re a very lovely couple and very natural and were wonderful company.”

The Duke of Cambridge speaks to Thirty Club as he approaches 30th birthday

For nine years, the Duke has been asked to speak at one of Britain’s “most exclusive” and “elitist” dining clubs: The Thirty Club at Claridge’s in London. However, it is this year, as William hits two major life milestones (his 30th birthday and first year anniversary of marriage) that he has followed in both his mother’s and grandfather’s footsteps by speaking to the prestigious crowd said to be comprised of leading executives in the advertising and media industries.

An aide told The Express: “You can’t go around making speeches to these types of people when you’re in your 20s but he’ll be doing more of this sort of thing now he’s that bit older.”

“He thought it right to accept the invitation as he has a personal landmark coming up and it’s a landmark year for the Royal Family.”
